Teaching your dogs to be agile is one way to keep them healthy and strong as they grow older. This kind of training can be started with young pups by taking them on walks regularly starting at about 3-4 months of age. Agility training for dogs is a great way to help your dogs excel in dog competitions or simply to be healthier and stronger. If you want your dogs to be your protectors, they can also become more capable of protecting you and your family through a series of agility training exercises.

As your puppy grows older, you can then introduce longer walks, occasional runs and chasing Frisbees. This is one good way of developing your dog’s muscles and making sure that he doesn’t become overweight, which may lead to some complications later.

Young puppies, especially, should be taken special care of whenever you give them agility training for dogs. The muscles and joints of small, young dogs are usually still fragile, so you need to train your pup in a gradual manner. Do not overtrain your dog, as this may result to serious bone injuries.

Agility training for dogs can prepare them for agility competitions that you may be interested to have them join. These games usually include running and jumping across obstacles, so part of his training should include building up his confidence to negotiate each challenge.

Each obstacle should give you the opportunity to motivate him and to make it enjoyable for him. Train your puppy to hear your voice and follow your commands, since during the agility training for dogs, you will not be using a collar or a leash on your dog. It takes some practice for your dog to obey your commands, so be patient as you help your dog through the stages of the training.

Agility training for dogs can be a special time for you and your dog. It will give you some satisfaction to see your dog getting stronger and more alert, which is important, especially if you expect your dog not just to be a companion dog, but one who protects your family also. It takes some patience so you need to be prepared for that. You will see that the time you Will spend on training your puppy will all be worth it.

Dog kennels and runs have been around for many years, maybe you need one? There is often a perception that they are cruel to the animal in some way. I would contest that idea for many reasons, in fact I think any dog, or most dogs are probably better off with kennels in the right kind of environment.

I have owned dogs for many years and have a lot of experience in ensuring I have a healthy animal. First off I would like to say that kennels and runs are not right for all dog owners. They must be used in conjunction with walking, animal socialization and training of the animal. If you are interested in dog kennels and runs you must be willing to still walk you animal and make sure it is properly socialized with other dogs as a dog confined in a kennel and run will not be a happy dog.

If you work a lot and have an dog that is likely to roam the neighborhood and fight with other dogs, or possibly even worse, get run over by a car then dog kennels and runs are a great idea for you as they will ensure your dog is kept in a safe and secure environment where the animal is still able to exercise, without becoming a nuisance to your neighbors or dying in traffic. This can be a great method of ensuring that these problems do not arise.

Dog kennels should be placed in the right environment, ensuring that stress levels due to noise and other dogs are kept to a minimum. They must also be of quality construction and materials. This important not only for the safety of your pet but will also ensure the dog cannot escape. This is especially true if you have a stronger, more energetic dog that is likely to put a strain on the kennel and run.

Having dogs for most of my life and using kennels and runs for all of my dogs means that I have come to see them as a normal part of owning a dog. I don’t have to worry about my dog fighting with other dogs, getting run over, or being a nuisance in my neighborhood. I make sure my dog is properly trained and take my dogs for regular exercise also ensuring that the dog comes into contact with other animals, ensuring better socialization of the animal.

So, if you are willing to take the correct steps to ensure you have a happy and healthy animal, then kennels or runs are the right way to go. Take a look online and find the right one for your dog, or maybe make it a weekend project and do-it-yourself.

If you want to learn more info on dog kennels and runs, don’t wait and visit Peter Sibierski’s most comprehensive online guide on wooden dog kennels and other dog care items to get recent updates, find the best offers, read reviews, discover all the facts and check where to shop.

In the United States the fourth of July marks the national holiday of Independence Day. For your dog, this can mean a day that is not very pleasant at all. If you are thinking about leaving your dog alone on the 4th of July, here are some things to think about that might change your mind.

Fireworks can be loud and frightening. Your pet needs some extra care and attention to ensure this day is not damaging, either physically or emotionally. The booms, cracks, and pops of fireworks, even from distances far away from your home, may have a strong effect on even the most docile of dogs.

Dogs can get so anxious that they become frantic, and they can then start becoming very destructive. Some dogs jump through plate glass windows, tear up drywall and doors, and look for anything to destroy. The destruction of property is in addition to the injuries they can sustain during this time.

Many veterinarians prescribe sedatives to pet owners to help their dogs remain calm. These sedatives lower the dog’s blood pressure and help to mellow them out. But drugs are not always the best solution to this situation.

Your dog may attempt to jump the fence in a panic just to escape the noise, and many dogs go missing when they run away out of fear. Another option is to care for your dog by placing them in a kennel during the holiday festivities.

Fireworks are just one part of the dilemma. While the noise is a major concern, the heat can also be potentially deadly to any type of pet. Your family may leave the house to enjoy the day and leave your dog in the backyard. In this kind of heat it doesn’t take long for them to become overheated. Dogs can die of heat stroke, or may need to be rushed into the emergency room of your veterinarian’s office.

Animals that need to be left outside for the holiday should be provided with plenty of cold water, as well as some shade, so they can escape the heat and not get dehydrated. Add some ice cubes to the dish of water so that it will stay cold longer.

If you are planning on having a party to celebrate the 4th, the BBQ can be a place of injury for dogs. Objects popping off the grill, such as hot dogs and corn on the cob, can cause burns and other injury. Eating a lot of fatty foods, like chicken skin, can cause pancreatitis and make your dog extremely ill.

Other precautions include cleaning up any leftovers from your fireworks. The cardboard may contain potentially deadly gunpowder. Any flames from the cooking or the fireworks are dangerous as well. The best advice is to not leave your dog alone on this holiday.

And now I invite you to learn more about training your small dog by visiting Small Dog Tips Training to get started right away with having the pet your family wants and deserves.

Many dog training books promise excellent results that could highly influence us in buying them right off the bat. Trainers and dog lovers alike rely on intelligent tools for dog training that aid us through several stages of training. But how do we really know which training books deliver the result that they promised? Here are 5 simple tips that will help you in choosing a dog training book that really works:

First and foremost make sure that the dog training books you choose promote humane or gentle training methods. Training must be based on positive reinforcement, consistent encouragement and repetition. Consistency is the key, not force.

Secondly, the book must cover in full detail the three primary stages of dog training: helping your puppy to have a good start in life, obedience training and lastly, modify problem behaviour. If the book does not include any of these areas then move on to the next selection.

Thirdly, the techniques that are outlined in the book must be tried, tested and proven to work. Keep in mind that an expensive book is of no use unless it can actually deliver the result that it promises.

Next, the authors of dog training books should be more than willing to back up their products by guaranteeing a full refund. If they are confident enough in the quality of their book, they will offer this guarantee.

And lastly, the author should be able to provide a long list of genuine testimonials of those who have willingly shared their names and feedback about how the book helped them train their own dogs.

If you find the book that you’re looking for and correctly apply its techniques, with consistency and repetition, you are sure to succeed in your efforts and end up with a well-trained dog.

Dog collars are a great way to show your dog’s personality. They are also a great way to superimpose your own personality onto your dog. Some people choose to buy a whole doggy outfit or maybe just a sweater to do this. For those that do not want the expense of a whole doggy outfit or sweater, a custom dog collar is a good option to give your dog an extra flare.

Many people like to use simple, around the home items instead of a traditional collar. A feminine scarf for a female dog tied off to the side gives the dog some style. Just be sure there is a regular collar underneath with an identification tag. Another option is an bandana to give your dog that country living look.

Others choose to buy a custom collar, maybe in their favorite color, or embellished with fake gems. Some enjoy that gawdy look on their dog. We do not know how the dog feels about it, but more likely than not, they are just happy you are paying attention to them and showering them with affection.

Custom collars can really be whatever you want, though. You can buy a simple collar from a pet store and embellish it with sew on patches or order a custom collar that you design just for your dog. You can have symbols of your dog’s favorite things, like a sew on tennis ball, or have it represent the things you like to do together, like going to the park.

The most important aspect of a dog collar is the identification tag. Make sure that whichever collar you choose for your dog is has a place to attach an identification tag. The identification tag should have the name of the dog and either the address or phone number of the dog owner, which would be you. If the custom collar that you want for your dog does not have a place to attach a dog tag, buy a simple flea collar and attach the tag to that. Then you will be repelling fleas and keeping your dog secure.

John writes many articles about new dog collars and why a dog collar is important for effective training.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are renowned for their hardy temperaments. They are bred to jump into freezing water and retrieve downed game for their owners. But even these tough animals can have health issues. They are susceptible to the same ailments as any other dog, but additionally have some unique problems.

One of those unique problems is PRA. Progressive Retinal Atrophy affects the eyesight. The type of PRA common to Chessies is a variation called Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration. The first symptom that most owners will notice is night blindness in their pet. This can appear as the animal having trouble navigating in a dimly lit room. It can also show up as an unwillingness or fear to go out at night. Sadly, PRA generally creates total blindness.

PRA is hereditary. Oddly, both parents have to have it for it to appear in their offspring. If only one parent has it, it won’t develop in the pup. Because of this, it’s easy for breeders to be unaware of it in the parents until the puppies are born. It also means that generations can be born and die before it’s discovered. It usually doesn’t begin to appear until the animal is between four and seven years old. There is no cure for it at this time.

Another disease found is hip dysplasia. Canine hip dysplasia is a form of osteoarthritis. This disease is also hereditary and is polygenic. This means that a combination of genes cause it, not one dominate gene like is seen in other diseases. Environmental factors can affect CHD but they aren’t felt to be the cause of it. The only prevention for it is to breed specifically for normal hips. Canine hip dysplasia can be seen in puppies as young as seven weeks old.

There are several symptoms that are readily noticeable. One of the most common is refusing to climb stairs or the inability to climb stairs. Another easy to spot symptom is difficulty getting up from a sitting or lying position. Early morning stiffness that disappears after the animal warms up is another indicator. Probably the most distressing symptom for the owner is if their pet makes a clicking sound when walking.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers can also suffer from gastric torsion, or bloat. Bloat is fairly common in large breeds. This is a condition in which the stomach gets folded over onto itself. This causes gases and other byproducts of digestion to become trapped. There are several causes of it, most of which are avoidable. One common cause is exercise immediately after eating. Other causes are stress and anxiety, foods with too high a fat content, and rapid eating.

The symptoms of bloat are easy to spot. They include pacing, foamy saliva, gagging, and shallow breathing among others. If left untreated, gastric torsion can cause death. If your Chessie is exhibiting any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care for it right away. It frequently requires surgery as well as other medical care.

There really is no doubt that the least enjoyed aspect of owning a pet is when they wet on floors or bedclothes. This behaviour is usually sparked by an underlying reason such as anxiety, stress, a marking of territory or even a health related issue.

Separation anxiety can cause your dog to urinate on your clothing. They may also chew your personal items such as shoes or brushes. This is because the animal is feeling a degree of distress from being separated from you and is adopting behaviour that it finds comforting.

Another reason a dog will urinate on clothing is to mark it’s territory. This is especially true if there are other dogs already present in the house hold, and they are having to share the attention with them. Rest assured that these behaviours are relatively common and quickly remedied by implementing a daily routine which avoids stress and the marking of territory.

Unfortunately for puppies, they are not equipped at the start with the education required to have them completely house broken. This is why it is essential for the owner to spend a solid one to two weeks training and supervising the pup until it learns to urinate in a designated area. The key to success with toilet training your pup is consistency and being able to monitor and watch the pup constantly for the first one or two weeks.

Older dogs should have veterinary attention sought if they suddenly start to urinate inside. Often this is an indicator that there is a medical problem and Veterinary attention should be sought immediately.

By de-sexing or neutering your pet at an early age, your chances of having them successfully house trained are greatly increased.

If you do have a pet that is wetting inside, you are more than likely familiar with the unsavoury smell that the urine will leave on your furnishings and clothing. Many off-the-shelf products are available to remove pet odours and and urine from carpets, and there are also some just as effective home remedies also that are less costly to make and use. I am listing below the ingredients for removing old urine stains and smells as well as getting rid of all new deposits.

You Will Need:
* Baking Soda
* White Vinegar
* Liquid Dish Washing Detergent
* 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (available from chemists/Drug Stores)
* Plastic Pump Spray Bottle
* Rubber Gloves
* Scrubbing Brush

If the urine is fresh, simply blot up as much as you can with paper towel. Continue blotting until the carpet is dry.

Make a mixture of 50% water and 50% vinegar. Spray the area liberally and work it into the carpet pile with a cloth or your hands, ensuring you wear gloves. The vinegar will begin to neutralise the acidity of the animals urine and will remove the smell. Start blotting the area once more, to remove as much of the wetness as possible.

After the spot has dried, baking powder should be sprinkled over the entire area of the stain. Measure half a cup of Hydrogen peroxide 3% and mix with a teaspoon of dish washing detergent. Be sure to be wearing your rubber gloves. Pour the mixture over the baking soda and work into the pile once more with your fingers, and use a scrubbing brush if possible to remove old stains.

Once the carpet has dried, be sure to vacuum thoroughly. This is often thought of as the most efficient and economical way to eliminate stains and odours from animal urine.

1. Dogs Use Instinct – NOT Emotion

You have to understand that dogs use instincts instead of emotion. They do NOT feel the emotions that we do even though some dog owners will swear their dog has the same thinking ability as them. One good example of this is if your dog nudges your hand so that you will pet his head or scratch him, a human will come to the conclusion that his dog is being affectionate but in reality, his dog is displaying dominant behavior. Yes, I know, you refuse to believe that, right? Believe it!

Please don’t treat your dog as if he/she is a human being. This is a mistake. It can lead to more difficult problems when you don’t understand how Fido’s mind works. Here’s a good example: If your dog starts barking at another dog, an owner will sometimes pick that dog up so they stop barking. This will only reinforce Fido’s behavior because you’re giving him attention. It ends up elevating his position as an Alpha dog. Something you definitely don’t want.

2. Know How A Dog’s Pack Life Works

Dogs live in packs in the wild and they are highly organized. The dogs are ranked from highest, which is the Alpha dog, to the lowest. First access to all resources goes to the Alpha dog and he/she controls the release to all the lower pack members. You really need to understand this because you have to make your dog understand that YOU are the Alpha dog in your home, not him. Your dog needs to feel secure that you are the leader. That way he will let you make decisions, therefore your dog will not be aggressive. If you don’t make him understand that, he will take it upon himself to be the Alpha and then you’re in trouble.

3. Communicate In A Way They Can Understand

Remember, dogs do not actually understand English, Spanish or any other language. They simply learn to associate the sound of a word with an action, tone or object. This is why a dog will often respond to a word that rhymes with a command, because the overall sound is similar. For the same reason a dog will often NOT respond to a command that is said in a tone, accent or volume that is “unfamiliar” to him.

So when you choose commands for your dog, be sure to use short words that have a very distinctive sound to them. Never use the same word for different commands. A good example of this is the word “down”. If you use “down” to get him off the couch, don’t use “down” to make him lay down. Make sure your tone stays the same, too.

Communication with your dog starts with making him give you his full attention, so you need to call out his name before blurting out a command. He has to be able to pick out familiar sounds that YOU give him because all day long he hears UNFAMILIAR sounds. Make your voice the familiar sound for him. That’s why it’s so important to call his name first so he knows you are speaking to HIM only and your sounds are what he needs to listen to.

Don’t forget that dogs understand body language. If he sees anger from you don’t expect him to come to you with his tail wagging.

Please remember that dogs do not know right and wrong, they just know there is some reaction to their behavior. A good example of this is if your dog chews on any of your furniture, you put him outside for a time out. He then starts to understand that chewing on furniture means he gets ignored so he learns to quit showing that kind of behavior.

Just understand that not everything you and he do will be good communication because sometimes dog’s are just a mystery. But that’s one of the reasons we love them so much!

Small puppies usually undergo the teething stage, that’s why they bite a lot. So, if you have chosen to acquire a young dog, you better prepare yourself for frequent biting. Ready yourself for the dog biting problems that you have to face. However, you do not really have to worry because even if puppy bites may be a little painful, they don’t cause any serious injury. Nevertheless, it is best to start training a puppy. Puppies are easier to train compared to older dogs. But it is more preferable not to take the puppy away from its mother until it is ten weeks old. At this age, it is only beginning to learn painful and non-painful biting. So, you better let it play-fight with its siblings first.

Then, once your puppy is old enough for training, you have to tour it around your house and your neighborhood. It needs to become familiar with its surroundings so it will know that it is secured. As you know, unfamiliar surroundings can prompt aggressive behaviors in dogs such as biting, gnawing, and barking. And you and your neighbors will not be pleased if it develops dog biting problems. So, you really have to introduce it to people and places around. You must also allow it to be touched and patted by your family and friends so it will know that these people are allies. Dogs have this predator kind of mentality, and it sees you as its ally. But you must also let it know that you are, in fact, the leader of the pack. So, it must listen and obey you at all times.

Then, you must prevent your dog from being stressed as stress can cause dog biting problems. You have to avoid leaving it alone in your house often, or leaving it in an unfamiliar place. However, leaving for work or travel is inevitable. So, be sure that you train your dog to become used being left in the house. You must also make sure that it does not get into fights with your neighbors’ dogs because this might also cause it to become stressed. In addition, you have to show that you love and care for it. You must give it enough attention everyday. It will appreciate even just a simple pat on its head or a rub on its tummy. But you must also walk it regularly and play with it often. You must talk to it and praise it, as well.

Moreover, you have to feed it everyday with nutritious foods. You can buy dog foods in supermarkets. These goods are especially formulated with the necessary nutrients that dogs need. But you can also feed it with cooked meat. Then, you must also not forget to reward it with delicious treats. Hot dogs or cooked pieces of chicken are recommended. So, if you follow these suggestions, you and your dog will have a harmonious relationship. And you will be able to avoid dog biting problems in general, as well.

In order to avoid dog behavior problems you have to train your dog carefully. You can only train your dog well by knowing the right method. You can find everything you need to train your dog here: http://e-training4dogs.com

So you want your pet to be a Hollywood star? But how do you get started? Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to fame and fortune, well for your pooch at least.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND MORE PRACTICE

Sure your dog can sit, shake and maybe even stay on a good day. But they better be prepared for much harder tests than that. Pets on a television or movie set will be expected to perform a certain amount of basic tasks and be able to concentrate in a busy, hectic environment. And they might be expected to listen to different trainers. One prominent agency, Hollywood Paws®, recommends that you first aim to have your dog pass the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenship test. This test emphasizes obedience, agility and performance. This is a good place to start to make sure your dog will be able to learn basic commands.

SOCIALIZATION

Other agencies like the Animal Actors Agency stress the importance of exposing your pet to interesting and challenging environments and having them spend time around other pets and people. Try seeing how your pet acts when other people are in charge of him. You’ll be handing your dog over to trainers in many situations, so they need to be comfortable with anything you throw at them.

THE MUST HAVE LOOK

There are certain breeds that are more desirable in the biz than others: retrievers, labradors, collies, and bulldogs are some of the most popular. But no need to fret; plenty of people want your lovable little mutt as well. Just like human actors have to be chosen for a part, your pet will need to compete with all the other pups for the part. Everyone thinks their pets are the cutest, but you have to be able to catch the director’s eye!

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU FIND AN AGENCY

This is their business. You will represent their agency. So if you’re going to trust them enough to represent your pet, you better listen to what they have to say. Be prepared to undergo much more vigorous training. Your pets will need many more tricks, like being able to speak on command and following specific people. Then there are the headshots of course. Make sure your pet is well groomed for his photo shoot!

WHERE TO START YOUR SEARCH

1. Hollywood Paws

Takes cats and dogs and provides all the training you need. Experience includes: Hotel for Dogs, Legally Blonde 2, Miller Lite, Burger King, Verizon, Desperate Housewives, and many more.

2. Hollywood Animals’ Animal Actors Agency

Takes cats, dogs, and even more exotic animals like flamingos, horses, and lizards. Experience includes: The Whole 10 Yards, HBO’s Carnivale, Baby Gap, Petco, Purina, American Idol, and many more.
